E3 2006 First Look Preview

In Brave Shot 2, players are forced to tackle giant, robotic bosses without any armor to protect them. This is a side-scrolling shooter, but you don’t get to fly a speedy ship. You don’t get to be in any vehicle at all, and only weapons to defend yourself. As one fearless soldier, you’ll attempt to defeat dozens of deadly, blast-firing enemies and make it out of the game alive…on foot.

So the story goes for Brave Shot 2, an action shooter that’s reminiscent of the classic Contra games. Graphics are primarily two-dimensional, but Square Enix has included a couple of 3D elements to spice up the once stale visuals of mobile gaming. Some of the enemies are 3D and wrapped in semi-pixelated polygons, while the laser blasts (straight, circular, etc.) appeared to be a 2D sprite effect. The overall look was satisfying considering the platform and the small size of a mobile phone screen.

Brave Shot 2 will include six levels of arcade-style gameplay, with plenty of hazards to dodge and numerous over-sized enemies to overcome. All seems normal until aliens start to invade. Before you know it you’re fighting unfamiliar creatures, Gundam-sized mechs, and dodging more attacks than you can count. There isn’t much room for mistakes – another element that will take gamers back to the days of Contra.

Coming to cell phones everywhere later this year, Brave Shot 2 should be one of Square Enix’s finest mobile releases.
